Girls’ Sport 11.10.24

Last Saturday the U10 girls played in their first Hockey Tournament at Rosehill School. It was a beautiful morning with lots of support. The team improved as the morning progressed and came up against some tough opposition, but did manage to beat St Ronan’s and draw against St Michael’s. Unfortunately they lost against Rosehill and Somerhill, but it was a great morning with lots of learning. Well Done girls and many thanks to Miss Bowman who coached and umpired throughout the morning.

It was great to have a full block against Dulwich this week, with all the girls playing the same school on Wednesday. The results were very impressive with 7 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss for the 10 matches played.

1st Team Hockey

The 1st VII earned a 5-1 victory away to Dulwich Prep on Wednesday. The girls started well, with Francesca scoring an early goal to put Holmewood into the lead in the first minute. Dulwich held firm, though, and despite lots of possession in the first half Holmewood were only able to score once more through a well-worked goal from Mae.

In the second half, Astrid, Maisie and Hen were all able to get a taste of first team hockey and equipped themselves excellently, creating some superb scoring chances. A second-half goal from Saoirse extended the lead, before a great counter-attack from Dulwich earned them a goal to keep the scores tight. Over the remainder of the second half, two excellent goals from Betsy would leave the final score at 5-1. DB

2nd Team Hockey

The Holmewood girls spent most of the game in their attacking half but really struggled to score. We had a big squad so there was lots of rotation and the middies were working really hard running up and down the pitch and creating the scoring opportunities. The DPS goal keeper had a great game making save after save but we kept going and eventually scored the only goal of the game. TB

3rd Team Hockey

The 3rd girls had a trip to Marden Hockey club on Wednesday to face Dulwich Prep. The girls were really positive, controlling most of the game and had multiple chances to score, however it wasn’t our day in front of goal, our defence was rock solid keeping the opposition from creating chances and we ended the game with a draw. Loads of positives to take from the game! Well done girls! DG

4th Team Hockey

The 4ths faced Dulwich on Wednesday and had a great day out! They played some really good hockey leading to 2 fantastic goals. Some great passing and moving allowed us to completely dominate the game. The girls stuck to the plan and played fantastically as a team. All the hard work payed off as we won 2-0. Well done girls! DG

U11A Hockey

The U11A team played at Dulwich in what was initially a tightly contested game. However, Holmewood settled into their play and started to use the wings. Crossing the ball across the goal Clemmie scored the first of our goals. We then went on to score 2 more, one from Shekinah and the other from Lavinia in a short corner. The defence worked well, clearing the ball wide and Pippa as Goalkeeper was again nominated as girl of the game. A 3-0 win was well deserved! Well done girls! SP

U11B Hockey

The under 11 B travelled to Dulwich, Cranbrook for a game of four quarters, allowing all eight players to rotate and sit out as reserve accordingly. Dulwich started the game with the first pushback, but it was Holmewood House who was soon in possession, surging forward as a unit, keeping the shape, allowing the forwards to attack the goal. An early goal came from Nilaya. Holmewood House had plenty of possession, and it was great to see how in sync this team now play, working together and using the whole pitch and finding great space. We had plenty of attempts at goal with one shot hitting the post and all credit to their goalkeeper who was defiant. Well done to Cassie, who took a knock, but was excellent in defence. This team is learning quickly with a good understanding of the game. Just more work on our finishing. Well Done to POM Cassie and Ottliie (Captain). Also Well Done to Maya, Zoe, Charlotte, Eleanor, Amaia and Nilaya. SE

U11C Hockey

Having joined up with the squad for the first time Mr.Jervis went into this game blind as to positions that the girls would play. To his delight, they took the lead and everyone agreed the positions they would play showing great team spirit. The game was played in good spirits and following some reluctance to pass the ball into space, the girls showed good progress to start playing as a team and found that by passing the ball they would quickly gain far more territory than if they tried to dribble through all of the opposition on their pursuit of the goal. The team had their chances but just couldn’t manage to get that goal that they deserved. Dulwich were just a little bit more clinical in the final third and despite the best efforts of Rebecca in goal who made a couple of fine saves, managed to squeeze in 2 late goals to take the spoils. Well done to everyone with special mention to Deya who was given the accolade of girl of the game by the opposition. SJ

U10A Hockey

Having played on Saturday, it was great to keep the momentum and have another match so soon. The girls were by far the stronger team and had most of the possession. An early goal from Myra put the team up, but they struggled to score with so many players in front of the goal. Following up their shots and being quicker on the ball to shoot will improve their chances of scoring more goals, but there was also some great play down the wings and into the D. Temi was invincible and her work in defence is such an asset to the team. She was nominated girl of the game, and the team came away with a 1-0 win. Well done girls! SP

U10 B Hockey

A really exciting match from the U10Bs. It was fantastic to see skills they have been learning in games sessions put into practice in this match. A real sense of teamwork, some brilliant passing out and 7 amazing goals! The girls were happy to try different positions during the match and the effort from each player was fantastic! LM

U10C Hockey

The girls played really well as a team during this match. It is wonderful to see their skills developing and there was some great defence. Although there were no goals on either side, they had good possession and enjoyed the match! LM

U9 Netball

The Year 4 girls should be very proud of themselves and their efforts in their netball match against St Ronans. It showed that St Ronans were in the middle of their netball season with some lovely passing down the court however the Holmewood girls never gave up and made the opposition have to work really hard. We struggled to score as the posts are higher than when they played last year so this will take some getting used to but there’s lots to look forward to when we change to netball in a few weeks time. TB

U8 Netball

The U8 girls played not only their first ever away match, but also their first netball match. Full of excitement, we travelled to St Ronan’s and had an energetic and fun afternoon. Having only had one session and a few breaktimes to play some netball, the girls played remarkably well and should be proud of their positivity and determination. Back to hockey next week for the remainder of the season. Well done girls!! SP
