We have had another beautiful week in the sunshine making the end of term sport so pleasurable for all.
The final matches were against Hazelwood with some more great football. The level of play has improved so much over the last couple of years and to watch the 1st team and 2nd teams in their final matches of the season showed how much girls football has progressed!
A big well done to all the girls and thank you to the parents for all your support and encouragement. Have a wonderful Easter and we will see you for a busy term of summer sports on our return.
1st Team Football
The 1st team girls’ final game of the season was one for the ages! After an intense warmup, Hazelwood took to the Holmewood turf to with real enthusiasm and were clearly a well drilled, organised team. The first half was tight with Holmewood taking the lead through a bizarre goal. Saoirse took a long throw which was heading towards the goal. Blanca contested the ball with both their final defender and the goalkeeper, and the ball managed to squirm its way through all the bodies to find the net through a combination of deflections and miskicks from their defence. This was uncharacteristic of their goalkeeper who ended up becoming a metaphorical wall, impossible to get the ball past for long stretches of the game. After Holmewood took the lead, Hazelwood pulled a goal back with the final kick of the 1st half, despite Rosie’s best efforts in goal it was a near impossible shot to save.
The second half kicked off with the teams tied at 1-1. Astrid and Betsy provided fantastic width giving Holmewood a great outball for the defenders, Darcie, Mae and Davincia to aim for. Bella and Saoirse pulled the strings in the middle of the park which was highlighted by Saoirse scoring a fantastic solo goal taking on a defender and slotting the ball into the corner of the net from a tight angle to take the lead. This gave Hazelwood a spark of energy and they struck back with two quick goals to take the lead 3-2 with 2 minutes to play. With the Holmewood second team watching from the sidelines, the atmosphere picked up and Holmewood were given the extra boost they needed, with a determined and composed goal from Bella taking the game to 3-3. The crowd went wild, and spirits were high, but the drama had only just begun. With one minute left to play Holmewood managed to pass their way to the Hazelwood penalty area. The ball was pinging around the box, and it looked like we were destined for a memorable 3-3 draw until the ball came to Blanca on the edge of the box, who volleyed the ball first time into the bottom corner of the net. The team and fans went wild as Holmewood took a deserving 4-3 lead with the last play of the game. This was such an exciting game, and the girls deserve a huge amount of credit for never giving up and creating an amazing memory in what will be most of the teams last football match at Holmewood House. 2nd Team Football
After a tight first half with no goals scored, the breakthrough came early in the second half with a super goal by Tilly. The team continued to play well, with a strong defensive performance, keeping the opposition at bay. 2 more goals were scored by Hen to seal the win! A brilliant all-round performance – strong in attack and solid at the back. Well played girls! KL
U11 Football v Hazelwood
Won 5 0
A squad of 10 travelled to Hazelwood to play 8 aside allowing plenty of rotations throughout the match. A great start with plenty of possession and quick passing with all the girls finding good space and moving the ball forward. There were numerous goal mouth opportunities with Shekinah scoring twice and Clemmie finding the back of the net after a great strike which hit the post. The second half saw much the same with Iona, Millie and Antonia defending tightly and Goalkeeper Pippa making some great saves. Shekinah scored to make her hat trick and Nilaya scored to make our final score 5 0. A really great performance to finish the term and delighted to see a fabulous team effort. POM Shekinah. Well done to Iona, Lavinia, Millie, Pippa, Zoe, Antonia, Clemmie, Maya, Nilaya and Shekinah. SE
Under 10A football
The final game of the season was an away match at Hazelwood with a hint of cricket season weather upon us. The girls played incredibly well and after a number of sustained attacks in the first few minutes from Hazelwood the girls weathered the storm and were 1-0 up at half time. The girls continued their brilliant form into the second half and ran their socks of finishing the game 2-0 winners. This wraps up a brilliant season for the girls.
Under 10B Football
The U10B team played their final football game of the season at a sunny Hazelwood school.
As the game went on, all were starting to hold positions better, stretching the Hazelwood defence and using the width of the pitch, and relentless attack, goal after goal went in. Result was 4-0 with POM awarded to goalkeeper Emilia who made a fantastic save!
U10C Football
The team arrived at a very sunny Hazelwood in good spirits, ready to kick of their final game of the football season. HH started strongly with Tamzin quickly firing two great goals into the bottom left corner – both unstoppable attempts. HH continued to threaten with Florence H and Anna both working hard to kickstart some more HH attacks. Just before half time the pressure paid off with Tamzin grabbing her hattrick with a nice finish into the centre of the goal! The second half saw Hazelwood show their attacking threat with them grabbing two nice team goals to pull them back into the game. However, thanks to some brave goalkeeping from Florence W – Hazelwood were unable to find a goal to tie the game. Full time 3-2 win to HH. BW
