Girls’ Sport 20.9.24

This week was a very busy week with hockey matches being played against St Andrew’s and St Michael’s and the Brenchley Cross Country Relay being held at St Ronan’s. Fortunately we were blessed with more typical September weather and it was great to see so many parents spectating and cheering the pupils on.

1st Team Hockey:

The 1st VII had an excellent game away at St. Andrew’s, fighting hard in a back-and-forth encounter against strong opposition. St. Andrew’s took the lead early on, but some spirited running from captain Francesca created some excellent scoring opportunities and the girls soon equalised through a well-worked goal. They then went on to take the lead, before the home side equalised just before half time. Some excellent saves from player-of-the-game Harriet meant kept the game close throughout some sustained bouts of pressure, with Rosie defending fiercely at the back and providing excellent distribution to the forwards. In the second half, some excellent work from Saoirse up front meant that Holmewood were able to take the lead going into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, a superb short-corner move from the home side again levelled the scores in the final few minutes and the game ended in a 3-3 draw. Every one of the girls was superb and they showed much improvement from their tricky outing the previous week. DB

2nd Team Hockey:

After wiping the slate clean from last weeks defeat, a newly spirited 2nd team came out with more confidence and gave St Andrews a great game. We dominated a lot of the game with some good passing leading to our goals scored by Hen and Astrid, but it was not enough as St Andrews came away with the win. Loads of positives to take from the game. Well done girls! DG

3rd Team Hockey:

After a very warm afternoon in Eastbourne, the girls started their match well with some good play up and down the pitch, however the girls started to tire as the game went on and were caught out of position which allowed St Andrews to sneak the only goal of the game. Thank you to

Kitty and Darcie who very kindly stepped in as goalkeeper and made some important saves, were well supported in defence by Davincia, who deservedly got girl of the game. Well done girls! TB

U11A Hockey:

This was the Year 6’s first match of the season, and what a match it was! The girls played with real determination and worked incredibly hard on a hot and sunny afternoon. There was some great running down the wings by Shekinah, Millie and Clemmie whilst Lavinia worked tirelessly in the centre and Nilaya tried to convert the goals. There was also some strong defensive work from Iona, Zoe and Antonia. The performance of the day, however had to go to the goalie, Pippa, as she saved goal after goal showing real courage and tenacity with some hard and even high shots. Quite rightly she was voted girl of the game and with a great team performance we scored 2 goals to come away with a 2-0 win. A great start and I look forward to what promises to be an exciting season. SP

U11B Hockey:

The U11B team had a very tight game with end to end play and both teams struggling to score the goals. The team improved throughout the match and it was very demanding on a hot afternoon. Amaia was very close to scoring and right in front of the goal when she was unfortunately injured by the opposition, but she was incredibly brave and calm! Eleanor ran tirelessly around the pitch and Maya was alert and ready in the goal, ready to make some vital saves. Charlotte helped in defence and turned beautifully to take the ball down the wing and away from the goal. Some girls had a double dose and played a little in both matches, so Nilaya, Zoe, Clemmie and Shekinah played a variety of positions. Shekinah was voted girls of the game and the result was 0-0. Well done girls! SP

Under 10A Hockey:

U10B’s played first against St Andrews. With 9 on the pitch, it did crowd the area. The Holmewood girls, started to find some space on the sides and scored a goal. Confidence in their play then rose and with Emilia in defence with others rotating positions, the ball never made it into our defending D. Another 2 goals were put in by us ending in a 3-0 win. A great team effort. KB

U10A’s were up next, starting strong, we kept the ball in our attacking half but struggled to find space. Learning to clear the ball out to the wings, chances at goal started to appear. Going into the second half, we were 1-0 up. Attacking from the whistle, St Andrews had started to run into tackles. Holmewood’s use of the width of the pitch allowed us to continue to dominate, but St Andrews did manage to break through a couple of times and Alice, Temi & Ella defended the goal well, clearing out to the sides. End result, 2-0. KB

U9A Hockey:

We had a lovely fun afternoon of hockey at Sevenoaks School where the girls played 5 other schools. We started off slowly with some of the girls looking rather overwhelmed but as the afternoon went on they relaxed and started to play something that resembled hockey!! They were exhausted by the end but the crisps, chocolate and Haribo soon perked them up. Well done for sticking at it girls and a great finish of second on the round robin table. TB

Under 9B and C Girls Hockey v St Michaels

U9Bs:

Won 6-0

The B Team borrowed a St Michael’s player and rotated positions after every goal scored. The girls played some excellent hockey, passing the ball forward using the space wisely and attacked the goal. Two goals each from Rosie, Lottie and Margot whilst Libby was pivotal in defence keeping the pressure on the opposition’s attack and Amelia- Rose worked tirelessly in midfield.

A great team performance. Well done to Margot (POM), Libby, Amelia -Rose, Lottie and Rosie. SE

U9Cs:

Won 2-0

The C Team also had an exciting game with lots of shots on goal and Bonnie and Scarlet were rewarded for their efforts. Emma and Whitney were determined not to let the ball past them in defence and Sophie was very effective in midfield.

Well done to Bonnie (POM), Scarlet, Emma , Whitney and Sophie. SE

U8 Hockey:

This was the first match for the year 3 girls and it was a great afternoon of play. Whilst St Michael’s were stronger in one of the games, Holmewood drew and won the other 2 games. Second week in is very early for a match, but it was a great experience for the girls who learnt so much from the experience and thoroughly enjoyed match tea. We need to work on our game play and positions over the next few sessions, which, I am sure will lead to great progress in the coming matches. Very well done girls and I look forward to the matches next week at home v Hazelwood . SP
