2nd XI vs St Andrew’s Prep, Eastbourne
The 2nd XI, featuring a newly formed team, played away against St Andrew’s Prep. The first half was evenly contested, with the scoreline remaining 0-0 at halftime. However, in the second half, St Andrew’s came back stronger, and despite our efforts, we couldn’t hold on, losing 0-3. The team showed great spirit, and we wish them the best of luck for their upcoming fixtures against Bedes and Aldwickbury!
3rd XI vs St Andrew’s Prep, Eastbourne
A fantastic win for the 3rd team with two great goals resulting in a solid result of 2-0. The first half had us playing downhill and a slight advantage, after a few good shots the ball hit the back of the net and we finished the half 1-0 up.
In the second half the game became high pressured with every pass, shot and dribble counting. Consistent attacks from the St Andre’s forwards were difficult to defend but our wall of defenders kept the ball away. A wonderful passage of passing led to a great goal. Player of the match was Pelumi for doing the thankless task of goalkeeper with confidence and excellent skill.
U11A vs St Andrew’s Prep, Eastbourne
The U11A team travelled to St Andrew’s to play on well-maintained pitches despite the overnight rain. We kicked off playing downhill, which gave us added momentum in attack. Initially, we opted for a three-at-the-back formation against their two, allowing us to turn over possession and launch effective counterattacks, getting behind their defenders and creating multiple goal-scoring opportunities. Louis Spokes put us ahead early on with a counterattack, followed by Arlo scoring from a corner.
As the half progressed, St Andrew’s gained control, pinning us in our half by dominating midfield with their three players. They were able to win back possession from our goal kicks and launch dangerous attacks from the left wing. However, we ended the half 2-0 up, though we were unlucky not to be further ahead after missing a few chances from well-executed counterattacks.
In the second half, playing uphill, we adjusted to a three-man midfield to try and maintain control. While we dominated possession, we were caught on the counterattack after pushing deep into their half and failing to capitalise on opportunities. St Andrew’s slowly closed the gap, finishing their chances as we missed or overplayed in their box. In the final minutes of an extended second half, they scored two more goals to take the lead for the first time, leaving the boys disappointed after a strong performance. Despite playing well, missed opportunities cost us, while St Andrew’s capitalised on theirs to secure the comeback victory.
U11B vs St Andrew’s Prep, Eastbourne
On a grey, mild Wednesday, but with conditions very wet under foot, the Colts B welcomed St. Andrew’s Prep School from Eastbourne, to the South Lawn at Holmewood, for their latest football match. Confidence was high after back-to-back wins against Brighton College and St. Ronan’s and some hard work on the training ground in Monday and Friday afternoon games sessions. Despite the very tricky conditions to play our attacking, passing, flowing football, the boys tried their hardest to stick to the game plan, which was about providing width, control, accuracy of pass and taking your chances when they came. Goals finally came along, after some stubborn defence from St. Andrew’s and Holmewood was 3-0 up at half time, with some well taken goals. One further goal at the start of the second half sealed a fabulous commanding 4-0 win. The goals were once again shared around but this was a real team effort. Well done Oscar J who had another good showing in the B team, having come into this side. The defence was solid, the midfield worked tirelessly and the forwards provided options down the left and right flanks. It was really a joy to watch at times and so nice to be congratulated by St. Andrew’s parents at the end of the game, who wanted to congratulate us on the way the game was managed and refereed. Smiling faces all round followed by a well-deserved lovely match tea. So, it is to another school from Eastbourne, Bede’s, that our focus turns, as we play them next week – our final match before half term. PM-J
U10A vs St Andrew’s Prep, Eastbourne
After a journey in the ‘VIP’ bus we arrived at St Andrews for another tough football match. Playing 8 a side the boys started slowly and found themselves 2-0 down quickly. However the boys quickly found a rhythm and managed to find a first goal quickly followed by 2 more to put them 3-2 up at the break (Orlando and Albert with the goals). A change of ends meant for the second half they would be shooting uphill and our defence needed to be strong. St Andrews found a fortunate equaliser and the score was 3-3 with 10 minutes left. In the 39th minute 1 minute from the end Will Green took a shot from outside the box which found its way in under the keeper to put the boys 4-3 up. 9 minutes extra time was played but the boys held on brilliantly to claim yet another win in a fantastic season.
U10B vs St Andrew’s Prep, Eastbourne
The Under 10B team had a comfortable 10-1 win in their home fixture against St Andrew’s School. The match was played mostly in the opposition’s half and resembled an attackers versus defenders training game. The goals were shared out amongst the team while everyone took turns in playing for St Andrews for a few minutes.
U9A vs Lingfield College
A sunny afternoon welcomed Lingfield for an under 9 A fixture on Thursday afternoon. Playing 6 a side there was plenty of space to play and pass the ball into. Lingfield got of to a quick start and at half time they were winning 3-1 with Holmewood’s goal coming from Charlie J. The boys worked extremely hard and managed to score 2 more goals (Charlie D and Freddie the scorers). Issac in goal played extremely well making some superb saves. The score finished 6-3 to Lingfield but Holmewood played extremely well.
U9B vs Lingfield College Prep
We welcomed Lingfield at home on Thursday. We started strongly, but although we had most of the possession we failed to score by half-time and therefore the score was 0-0. Lingfield started strongly and certainly got themselves back in the game but we galvanized ourselves and scored two very good breakaway goals. A 2-0 win was certainly a fair reflection of the game. Well played boys!
